Biography

Jefferson died August 8, 1913 and his obiturary was published as follows: Jefferson Andre, Old and Respected Citizen, Answers Last Summons Jefferson Andre was born in Dauphin county, Penn, on October 25, 1841. He died Friday, August 8, 1913, at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 14 days. He received a common school education and was employed in his father's cotton mill until October 8, 1861, when he enlisted for a term of 3 years in the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. He was assigned to Company K, belonging to the Sixth regiment, and received his honorable discharge October 10, 1864, having sacrificed himself for his country 3 years and 2 days. During the time he served in the civil war he was engaged in a few of the most important and deadly battles, the battle of Drainesville, December 20, 1861; battle of Bull Run, August 28, 29, and 30, 1862 and the battle of Antietam, September 16 and 17. 1862. In the battle of Fredricksburg, Va., December 13, 1862, he was wounded by a gunshot from the enemy and was detained for one year in the hospital. After his discharge from the army he followed various trades. He became in turn a shoemaker, basketmaker, and carpenter. August 24, 1865 he was united in marriage to Catharine Bingeman, of Uniontown, Penn. To this union were born, during their residence there, six children: Henry Alvin, Chas, Emma, Della, John and Will. In November 1878, Mr. Andre came to Furnas county to take up a homestead. In the spring of the following year Mrs. Andre and the children left their home in Pennsylvania to take up their new home in this state in its earliest civilization. In this new abode two more children were welcomed. Arthur and Roy, the latter passing away to the better world at the age of 1 year and 8 months. The family lived on their farm northwest of Hendley for 25 years, then feeling they had earned their rest, moved to Hendley. Mr Andre was converted in 1867 in the evangelical church at Uniontown, Penn. He united with the Baptist church in 1882, and thence in 1892 he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Hendley, of which he was a member and official in good standing until the day of his departure.. His noble life and christian character will leave a lasting impression for good upon the lives ot those left behind. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and children and a host of friends and neighbors everywhere throughout the community. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Episcopal church, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, by Rev. Henry F. Martens, and interment was made in the Hendley cemetery.

Civil War record is as follows from his Muster Rolls: Enlisted as a Private on 08 October, 1861, in the 6th Pennsylvania Reserves/35th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers Company K, recruited at Susquehanna County, Pa . Company Muster Rolls indicate he was "Present" with this unit from October 1861 to April 10, 1863. During that period of time his unit: Fought on 20 Dec 1861 at Dranesville, VA.; Fought on 21 Dec 1861 at Dranesville, VA.; Fought on 17 Apr 1862 at Nashville, TN.; Fought on 27 Jun 1862 at Gaines' Mill, VA.; Fought on 28 Aug 1862 at 2nd Bull Run, VA. ; Fought on 29 Aug 1862 at 2nd Bull Run, VA. ; Fought on 30 Aug 1862 at 2nd Bull Run, VA.; Fought on 14 Sep 1862 at South Mountain, MD. ; Fought on 17 Sep 1862 at Antietam, MD. ; Fought and on 13 Dec 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA.; Fought on 7 May 1863 at Fairfax, VA.; Fought on 2 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Wounded by gunshot , at battle of Gettysburg and transferred to hospital at Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pa. In the spring of 1864 while he was still on detached service, participated in the engagements of the Wilderness campaign in May and fought its final battle at Bethesda Church. After that engagement the regiment started for Harrisburg, where it was mustered out on June II, 1864, the veterans and recruits being transferred to the 191st Pa. infantry. He was transferred into 191st Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 31 May 1864
