Carl Andre was an American minimalist artist. He was suspected of murdering his wife, artist Ana Mendieta, though he was controversially acquitted of her murder in 1988.
Carl Andre was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on 16 September 1935 to Hans Karl Georg Andre and Maragret May Johnson. In 1965, he had his first public exhibition. Over his career, he has become known for minimalist grid work and linear art.[1]
Andre married Ana Maria Mendieta in 1985. Eight months later, following a violent argument that was overheard by neighbors and left him with scratches on his face, his wife fell 33 stories from their apartment onto the roof of a deli. He was charged with second-degree murder that night. He chose a trial to be decided by a judge rather than a jury and was acquitted. However, his exhibits have continued to face protests through the present.[2]
