Biography

Son of Karl Leonard Andre' and his wife Laura (Fjaerestrand) Andre', Roy Andre' was born at Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Both of his parents were immigrants, having arrived from Denmark in 1921 (Karl) and 1922 (Laura). His father was Swedish and his mother was Norwegian.

Times were not easy for an immigrant family, and his father worked as a baker for several companies. Early on, his parents lived in Astoria, where their apartment was on the top floor of a house that was perched high on a hill with a formidable set of steps to reach the house from the street level. By the time Roy was born, his parents had moved to Portland. When Roy was an adolescent his father took a job in southern California while the family continued to live at Portland. Laura Andre's good friend Vera Hendrickson would occasionally take Laura and her children to the Newport, Oregon area to visit her parents. Sometimes they stayed a month or more visiting the Hendrickson family. By 1932 Laura decided to live permanently at Newport. Then around 1933 Laura and the children moved to southern California to be with Karl. But Laura couldn't stand the heat, and in 1934 Laura and the children moved back to Newport, Oregon. Around 1936 Karl Andre' also moved back to Oregon and worked at a Corvallis bakery. Laura and the children then also moved to Corvallis. When Roy was a High School Sophomore, his mother wanted to move back to Newport, so Karl Andre' bought 11 acres in Agate Beach, just north of Newport, but Karl Andre' continued to work in Corvallis. Roy then went to school in Newport and functioned as the "man of the house" as his father was only able to come home on the occasional weekend. During this time, Roy learned many handy-man skills from sheer necessity. He also took shop at school but had conflicts with the teacher (who was primarily a math teacher) who insisted that Roy do things the wrong way and when Roy knew a better way the teacher came unglued.

When Roy was drafted in 1942 he was sent to the Kearns Army Air field in Kearns, Utah for basic training. It was there that Roy met LeRoy Hesgard. In the middle of his stint of basic training, Roy got very sick with Scarlet Fever and landed in the infirmary, then in the hospital in isolation for 30 days.

When he recovered, Roy was up for a short furlough, so he returned to the Newport area, but soon he had to return to Utah. This time he was sent to the Salt Lake Air Base. From there he was shipped to the Kearney Air Base at Kearney, Nebraska where he served as a Surgical Tech at the base hospital.

It was at the Adventist Church in Kearney, Nebraska that Roy Andre' met Doris Tillotson. He also met her family, as Doris insisted that they ask him home for Sabbath dinner. Roy Andre' and Doris Tillotson were married in June 1944. Their son was born the summer of 1945. Once Roy was discharged from the Army Air Corps, the little family headed west for the Portland, Oregon area where Doris' parents had moved in 1944.

Doris and Roy Andre' eventually settled on the Oregon coast, living in the Agate Beach and Newport area, where they raised their family. Roy earned his Master's Degree in Education in 1962 from the Oregon College of Education. He taught High School English and Shop classes in Newport. Then for a time Roy taught school at Milo Academy and Doris was the assistant girl's dean. Then they moved to Portland where Roy taught school and Doris was the assistant Dean of Women for the Nurse's Dormitory that housed the Walla Walla College nursing students while they were on clinical assignments in Portland. Then Roy taught school in Red Bluff, California. Eventually Doris and Roy retired to their property east of Newport, where they again built a house.

Roy Andre' died at home at Newport, Lincoln County, Oregon on January 22, 2016. He and Doris are both buried in the Willamette National Cemetery at Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. His Find-A-Grave Memorial is # 157544174.
