Catherine Anderson was born about 22 August 1864, the daughter of Charles Anderson and Catherine.^[1] Her family lived at the Hokitika settlement for some time in the 1860s before moving to the developing settlement of Reefton.

She married David Landsborough Cochrane in 1890.^[2] She worked as a schoolteacher as early as 1893 into 1896.^[3] The family moved up to Glen Eden by 1910.

She passed away on 17 March 1925 at her home in Glen Eden, aged 60.^[4] She was buried the next day in the Waikumete Cemetery.^[5][6][7]

Research Notes

In her mother's funeral notice (July 1896) she appears as "Mrs J. Cochrane",^[8] There was a James Cochrane living nearby at the time, but he does not seem to be Catherine's husband, so the papers may have been mistaken as to which Mr Cochrane was the husband. This James died in 1907, leaving a widow and children.^[9]

An unnamed baby Cochrane, interred in the Reefton Cemetery on 6 April 1899, looks to have been theirs.^[10]
