James Outram Anderson was born in September 1894, the eighth child of James Outram Anderson and his wife Patience (née Laycock).

James Outram Anderson the younger commonly known as J.O. Anderson, was an Australian tennis player. He is best remembered for his three victories at his home tournament the Australasian Championships; in 1922, 1924 and 1925. J.O. Anderson also won the doubles tournament at the 1922 Wimbledon Championships and the 1924 Australian Championships. Between 1919 and 1925 J.O. Anderson played in 15 ties for the Australian Davis Cup team, and compiled a record of 28 wins and 8 losses. In December 1926 Anderson turned professional and set up as a tennis coach in Sydney. He tried unsuccessfully to regain his amateur status in 1930.

James Outram Anderson enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the 19th of February, 1917. From his Attestation Papers we see:

Originally his father James Outram Anderson of Forbes was his Next of Kin, but with his subsequent marriage in March that year, his new new wife became his official Next of Kin. He was medically discharged in October 1917 after 240 days service.

James Outram Anderson married Miss Maud Irene Whitfield on the 24th of March 1917 at St James's Anglican Church, Sydney. They had five children before her death in 1955.

Then on the 18th of November 1957 he married widow, Mabel Little, who survived him. He was also survived by the son and four daughters of his first marriage.

J.O. Anderson passed away in December 1973 at Gosford in New South Wales, and is believed to be buried at the Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium, North Ryde, New South Wales. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in that same year.
