She served during WWII as a Lieutenant (jg) in the WAVES, stationed in Washington DC. On Dec. 26, 1945,

Ruth was a life-long member of the League of Women Voters[2] and served as President of the Painesville branch. In the 1950s, she was on the board of the Ohio League of Women Voters. In 1964-1965, Sulaiman Yusuf, an exchange student from Ethiopia, joined the family. In 1965-1967, Ruth and her husband Raymond were leading figures in the effort to create Lakeland Community College, working on the feasibility study, the referendum to approve the college and the vote to fund the new college. A graduate of Principia College (1941) and Western Reserve University (1964), she taught at Kent State and Cuyahoga Community College. Ruth taught at Lakeland Community College when it opened in the fall of 1967 in rented space above the Cleveland Trust Bank in Painesville, and for a number of years served as Personnel Director of Lakeland. While at Lakeland, she was instrumental in creating the Lake County Senior Citizens Center, 414 S Lewis Ave, Waukegan, IL. She was an active Christian Scientist and served on the boards of the churches in Painesville and later West Chester, Pennsylvania. Ruth had a soft spot for lost or stray dogs and ended up adopting several over the years. She also was concerned with maintaining some of the rural atmosphere of Concord Township and placed her Winchell Road land near Big Creek in Conservancy.
