André Marie Ampère was born on January 20, 1773 in Lyon. He was the son of Jean-Jacques Ampère, a bourgeois living in Lyon, and Jeanne Antoinette de Sarcey. He was baptized 22nd January 1773 in the Saint-Nizier church in Lyon. His godfather was Desutière Sarcey, former captain in the Régiment de Bretagne, and his godmother was Marie Magdeleine Berloy, represented by Antoinette Sarcey.

He was a scientist well known for his work on electricity. The SI unit of electrical current, the ampere [no accent], is named after him.

In first marriage, he married Catherine Antoinette Carron in Lyon, the 20th of thermidor in the 7 year of french revolutionary calendar.

In second marriage, he married Jean-Françoise Potot, but it ended in 1808[1]

He died in the college royal de Marseille (now lycée Thiers) the 10th June 1836.

André Marie Ampère est né le 20 janvier 1773 à Lyon. Il est le fils de Jean-Jacques Ampère, bourgeois de Lyon, et de Jeanne Antoinette de Sarcey. Il a été baptisé le 22 janvier suivant en l'église Saint-Nizier de Lyon avec pour parrain Desutière Sarcey, ancien capitaine au Régiment de Bretagne, et pour marraine Marie Magdeleine Berloy, représentée par Antoinette Sarcey[2].

André Marie Ampère, mathématicien a épousé Catherine Antoinette Carron le 20 thermidor an VII à Lyon (division du Nord)[3].

Il est connu pour ses travaux en mathématiques et en physique, notamment sur l'électricité. Il est considéré comme un des pères de l'électricité. En 1808, Napoléon le nomme inspecteur général de l'Université française impériale, récemment créée. En 1814, il est élu membre de l'Académie des sciences à Paris. Il est ensuite professeur au Collège de France (1824-1836). Il est aussi chevalier de la légion d'honneur[4].

L'unité du Système international de l'intensité du courant électrique est l'ampère (A) en hommage à ses travaux.

Il meurt dans le collège royal de Marseille (maintenant lycée Thiers) le 10 juin 1836[5]. Il est ensuite enterré à Paris dans le cimetière de Montmartre[6]
