Willis married Cassandra Moore on February 28, 1850.[2]
Cassandra died seven years later in 1857. After Willis returned from the war, he married Margaret Gilbert on October 22, 1865, in Wilkes County, Georgia. [3]
Military Service, Civil War
Willis enlisted as a private in Company G, 7th Battalion, Georgia Infantry on March 12, 1862. His place of enlistment was Beaulieu, Georgia. In May of 1862 in Charleston, South Carolina, the 7th Battalion became the nucleus for the formation of the 61st Infantry Regiment [also called 26th Regiment]. [4]
Willis spent many months of the war sick in a hospital with chronic diarrhea, a common malady during the war.
Willis was captured at High Bridge, Georgia, on April 6, 1865, at the end of the war. This would have been the battle of Sailor's Creek.
Willis signed an oath of allegiance to the United States on April 6th. The record lists his place of residence as Wilkes County Georgia. His description is described as 5' 8", with dark eyes, dark complexion, and black hair.[5]
Research Notes
Children and 1st wife need to be added to WT.
PROBLEM: It appears that there is no record of Willis at the Evergreen Cemetery in Saint Augustine, Florida. There is a Find a Grave memorial page, but no photo of a marker. I contacted a volunteer who stated the cemetery has no record of him. So either the FindAGrave profile is wrong or the cemetery records are wrong. I searched for his name and initials at other cemeteries. No luck. No idea where the death date is from. This needs more research.
