Thomas was born in Maryland about 1846. He passed away in 1922. He served for many years in the 10th Cavalry Regiment, United States Army, one of the regiments associated with the Buffalo Soldiers, and was involved in the unit’s move from Camp Supply to Fort Sill. He retired from the Army in December 1897 as a First Sergeant.
He participated in the Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877. He remained at the supply camp and later led a rescue effort to find Captain Nolan and his men after Sergeant Umbles declared them to be lost.
