Bartholomew Allerton, aka Alderton, was born in the 1550's, probably in the Essex/Suffolk border region and died between 7 Jul 1601 and 8 Jun 1603, probably in East Bergholt, Suffolk. His parents are unknown, but it is possible that he is related to Protestant martyr Ralph Allerton of Great Brentley, Essex, who was burned at the stake on 17 Sep 1555.[1]
Bartholomew married Mary ____ (b. mid-late 1550's, d. aft 8 Jun 1603), probably in the early 1580's and they had children, probably born in East Bergholt:[1]
The earliest record in East Bergholt for Bartholomew Allerton is found on a manorial court roll for Old Hall, East Bergholt, in frankpledge on 8 Apr 1583, so he would have been at least age 21 at this time, making his birth before 1562. He is found in similar records there over the next four years, through 1587. He next appears on the court rolls of Commandery Manor, East Bergholt, in 1586 and again in 1590. Finally, in 1593 and 1594, he received small bequests in the wills of a wealthy clothier and his son, Roger Maptyde (Sr. and Jr.) of East Bergholt, for whom Bartholomew may have worked.[1]
"Batholomew Alderton and his wife" are found on a 20 Feb 1597 list of recusants, as Brownists, enumerated by the Archdeaconry of Suffolk. "Mary, wife of Bartholomew Alderton, tailor" appears again on recusancy lists dated 16 Jan 1600 and 7 Jul 1601, and on the list dated 8 Jun 1603, she appears as a widow, indicating that Bartholomew had died between 1601-1603.[1]
Children of Bartholomew and Mary (Allerton) probably born in East Bergholt, where Bartholomew and Mary lived at the time:[1]
