Biography

Almeda (Allen) May is a part of US Black heritage.

Almeda Allen was born on 12 Oct 1860[1] in Gallia County, Ohio.[2] She was the daughter of Maria Clay and Julias Allen.[1][2] In 1870, she lived with her mother and siblings in Gallipolis Township, Gallia County, Ohio.[3] By 1880, her mother had married Rufus Squires and their family lived in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.[4]

Almeda had a son, James Franklin Allen, in 1876.[5] According to her later census records, he was her only child.[6][7]

Almeda married Harry Page on 3 Feb 1883 in Gallia County, Ohio.[8]

Almeda married Edward Yancy on 1 Aug 1892 in Gallia County, Ohio.[9] In 1900 they lived in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio with Almeda's son James and several boarders.[6]

Almeda married James May on 12 Feb 1910 in Franklin County, Ohio.[2] They lived in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio in 1910 and 1920.[7][10]

Almeda died on 8 Jun 1928 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. She was buried in Pine Street Cemetery in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.[1][11]

Research Notes

  • 1880 census: Almeda is assumed to be the "Seyes Allen" in her mother's household in the 1880 census based on the age and comparing it to the list of the children in their family's 1870 census record - there are no other records for a Seyes Allen and Almeda has not been identified in any other 1880 census records. Almeda's later records indicate that she had a son James Franklin Allen around 1876. He is has not been identified in the 1880 census yet, so it's possible he and Almeda lived somewhere else in 1880 or that he was born later than that.
  • Name spelling variation: The spelling of Almeda's name varies greatly in her records, including: Almeda, Almedia, Almeta, Elmeda, and Olwada. In many cases, to find her records, it was necessary to omit her first name from the search entirely or to search for other family members who were likely to be included in the same record.
