John Peter Langley Allen was born in 1920 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, the son of Charles John and Iris Edith Allen. [1]
He enlisted in the Australian Army Militia at Brisbane, QLD on 09 May 1940 as a Private (Q197029) in the 1st Labour Coy in Brisbane. At the time he was single, living with his mother at Ashgrove, QLD and had no occupation. He had dark hair, brown eyes and was 5 ft 6 & 1/2 in tall. [2] [3]
He was transferred to Headquarters Northern Command in Brisbane on 18 May 1940 and classified as a Clerk Group III.
On 23 Jan 1941 he was promoted Cpl.
On 17 Sep 1941 he was transferred to Headquarters, 8 MD and embarked on the MV "Macdhui" from Brisbane on 27 Sep 1941 for Rabaul, New Britain in the Territory of New Guinea. He disembarked there on 08 Oct 1941.
After the Japanese invasion of 23 Jan 1942, he was captured on the Lassul Bay coast and became a Prisoner of War, initially held at Rabaul.
He died on board the "Montevideo Maru" when it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of the Philippines on 01 Jul 1942, en route from Rabaul to Hainan where he was destined for forced labour. [4]
He has a memorial in the Rabaul War Cemetery and Memorial, Papua New Guinea. [5] He also has a memorial in the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. [6]
He was posthumously transferred to the 2nd AIF as QX64943.
