Colin was born in Brunswick, Victoria in 1912, son of Arthur Allatt and Charlotte Jane Edwards.[1]
He joined the Australian Army Militia Forces on 02 Oct 1930 for a 3 year term as a Private (182826) allocated to 46 Bn. He was just 18 and single and working in the timber trade. At the time he was 5 ft 5 & 3/4 in tall. He had previously served in Senior Cadets. He subsequently re-engaged for 3 years in 1933 and 1936.
Ruby Ross married Colin Edward Allatt on 4 April 1937 in Victoria. [2]
He was promoted Cpl on 12 Feb 1935. He was promoted Bugler Cpl on 10 Nov 1939 and transferred to the Regular Reserve on 26 Jan 1940. He was promoted Lance Sgt on 04 Apr 1940.
In 1937 Colin Edward Allatt (Labouer) and Ruby Allatt (Home Duties) lived at 68 Bay St, Sandringham, Victoria. [3]
On 22 Jun 1940 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF for service overseas as a Private (VX37021), allocated to 2/22Bn. At that time he was married (to Ruby) and a transport driver, living at Samdringham, Victoria. He was promoted A/Cpl on 24 Jul 1940 and to A/Sgt on 15 Jan 1941. He disembarked in Rabaul in the Territory of New Guinea on 28 Mar 1941.
When the Japanese invaded New Britain in Jan 1942 he was captured at Kiyabit (possibly Keravat?) and became a Prisoner of War.
He died on board the "Montevideo Maru" when it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of the Philippines en route from Rabaul to Hainan where he was destined for forced labour.
