William was born in 1897, probably at Everton, Liverpool. He was the son of John Alexander and Mary Hunter. He was christened on 19 December 1897 at St. George, Everton.
In the 1901 census, he was residing at Walton, Liverpool, with his mother and 2 older siblings.
In the 1911 census, he was residing at Walton, Liverpool, with his mother, her aunt, and 4 siblings.
in 1914, he migrated with his parents and three siblings to Auckland, New Zealand, on the ship Nairnshire, departing Liverpool on 20 June and arriving at Wellington on 20 August. His older brother apparently travelled separately, and was married in Auckland in December
He married Dorothy Gibson Tandy on 24 November 1927 at the Methodist parsonage, Mount Eden, Auckland. There were divorce proceedings in Auckland in 1944, although the outcome is unknown.
He passed away in 1969, at Burwood East, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, aged 71. He was cremated on 5 May 1969 at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.
