Biography

Pearl Josephine Alexander was born the 21st of February 1899, in Mankato, Minnesota.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] She was the eleventh of the thirteen children born to William Joseph "Joseph" Alexander and Margaret "Maggie" "Pearl" LaChapelle. At the tender age of sixteen Pearl married Ambrose Patrick "Pat" Hennager, in Blue Earth County, Minnesota.[10][11] Their first child, Glen, was born the following year.[12] Over the next six years Ambrose and Pearl had four more children together: Cleo,[13][14] Helen,[13] Irene[13][15] and Richard.[13] During that time Ambrose had registered for the Draft.[16] He was working as a Laborer and living in Mankato.[16] It is not clear when exactly things failed between Ambrose and Pearl, but the split was not amicable.[17] Around the year 1925 Ambrose took Glen, age 9, and Irene, age 5, to Missouri, while Pearl, Cleo, Helen and Richard stayed in Minnesota with Pearls parents.[13] Ambrose had changed his name to Pat and worked a farm in Missouri.

Pearl married Arthur "Art" Ellis on the 3rd of July 1937 in Decorah, Iowa. In the 1940 census Pearl (age 40) was the wife of Arthur S Ellis in Mankato, Blue Earth, Minnesota.[18] Her son Richard, age eighteen, was living with them. Art was working in masonry, as a brick layer. Pearl was working at a missionary heliport.

Pearl and Arthur lived in Mankato Township, Minnesota when the 1950 census was taken.[19] Arthur, forty-three, worked as a block layer for a construction company.[19] Pearl, forty-nine, stayed at home.[19] Also in the home was their fourteen-year-old grandson, Terry Johnson.[19] Two doors down was Pearl's son Bill and his wife Irene, with their family.[19]

Pearl passed away in September of 1981[20] in Mankato, Blue Earth, Minnesota. [5][6][7][9]

I remember when I was little and grandma, my mother's mother, would make homemade noodles. She would cut them into strips but they were really long noodles, so she would place chairs around and put one end of the noodles draped over it and then the other end on the counter. You would walk through her kitchen and there would be all these chairs strung with noodles so that she could dry and preserve them.
