Original Settler of Mound Bayou

Lawrence Aldridge (aka Lawrence Aldrich) was born enslaved about 1837 in Greensborough, Choctaw, Mississippi. Census records have his birth year as 1837. He came to Mound Bayou about 1895. It is not known where he was enslaved or to whom.[1]

Lawrence married Bettie around 1866 or 1867, based on the year of birth of their first child. They had 17 children: Rachell, Jack, Revel, Tutt, Alonzo, Will, Jenette, Hurtlena, James, Mary, Lizzie, Lee, Connie, Connor, Beluh, Lawrence Aldrich, Jr., Will Aldrich, b. 5 May 1904 d. 2 Aug 1939 Chicago. Buried in Mound Bayou.[2]

In the 1920 census Lawrence (age 83) was the married head of household with wife Bettie in Beat 5, Sunflower, Mississippi, United States.[3]

In the 1930 census Lawrence (age 93) was the married head of household with wife Bettie and son Lawrence in Beat 5, Sunflower, Mississippi, United States.[4]

The Negro at Mound Bayou

From the book by Aurelius P. Hood: Mr. Aldrich came to Mound Bayou about 1895, purchased, and has since paid for one hundred (100) acres of fertile delta soil, six miles east of the town just across Sunflower river, in the County of that same name. Mound Bayou, however, is his post office and his logical business place, and so he is very properly accounted a citizen of Mound Bayou.

Research Note

There is an Aldridge Cemetery in Lombardy, Sunflower County, Mississippi, United States of America. Lawrence is not memorialized there on FindAGrave, but a Bettie (Collins) Aldridge is.[5]
