Biography

John Joseph Alder was born November 15, 1892 in Duncan, Platt, Nebraska. He was the son of John Alder and Anna Catherine Zellweger. His mother died when he was just four years old.

Family

John was never married and does not have any known children.

Occupation

John worked various positions as a city marshall, police officer and sheriff over the years. Most of this time, he patrolled on his motorcycle. There is a picture of him with his motorcycle in Motorcycle Illustrated.[1] When he passed away, he was a deputy sheriff out of Redondo Beach, Los Angeles, California.

On June 1, 1916, John was promoted to the Redondo Motor Police with payment of $80 a month.[2]

On October 27, 1920, John was wounded during a persuit of two auto robbery suspects. He was shot once in the hip, once in the wrist, and once in the arm.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

In September 4, 1923, the Redondo chief of police requested another motor cycle patrolman position that he gave to John at a monthly salary of $165 a month.[9]

On September 27, 1924, John was riding his motorcycle at 2am one morning when he saw a woman walk out onto the Redondo Beach Pier. When he saw her jump, he jumped after her and brought her to shore. Once they were on shore, he learned that it was a suicide attempt and that she took her 6 week old baby with her. John went back into the water and found the baby in the breakers. The woman said she had been ill and had lost hope.[10]

On November 7, 1924, John was promoted to plain clothes detective by Chief Henry. His pay was $165 a month.[11]

On June 5, 1936, John, now a chief deputy constable at Gardenia and was to transfer to the Vermont Street Substation directed by Sheriff Biscailuz. He was later requested to transfer early, starting on May 15, 1936 .[12][13][14]

He was awarded several citations for distinguished service though the source is not clear what for. The citations read:

Military

John enlisted in World War I on March 12, 1918 in Redondo Beach, Los Angeles, California. He was assigned serial number 1149103 and assigned to "GM 3C NRF" (Gunner's Mate, 3rd Class, Naval Reserve Force?). He was discharged January 8, 1919.[21]

On March 11, 1919, it was announced that he recieved a citation as a gun captain by secretary Daniels.[22]

Community

John was a member of the Redondo Beach Gun Club.[23]

Residence

On Jun 6, 1900, John was enumerated at the age of 7 in the household of his father and step mother in Fairbury, Jefferson, Nebraska, United States.[24]

On April 23, 1910, John was enumerated at the age of 16 in the household of his father and step mother and sister "Esta Berta" (13) at 507 Gertrude Avenue, Redondo, Los Angeles, California, United States.[25]

On January 8, 1919, John registered for the World War Draft.[26]

On January 12, 1920, John was enumerated at the age of 27 at 147 Main Street, El Monte, Los Angeles, California, United States. He was listed as a roomer in the home of Sarah Burdick, a 59 year old widow. He was listed as a motorcycle officer.[27]

On April 7, 1930, john was enumerated at the age of 36 in his own home at 116, South Broadway, Redondo Beach, Los Angeles, California. He was listed as a city deputy.[28]

On November 6, 1935, he was listed in the obituary of his sister, Emma Alder Rapp.[29]

In April 1940, John was enumerated at the age of 47 in his own home at 118 South Broadway in Inglewood, Los Angeles, California. He was listed as a duputy sheriff with the county police.[30]

On April 25, 1942, he registered for the WWII Draft in Redondo Beach, Los Angeles, California. He was listed as 5' 8", 140lbs with brown eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. He lived at 116 So. Broadway, Redondo Beach, California.[31]

Death

John Joseph Alder passed away in 1943 in the Grand View Sanitarium in Whittier, Los Angeles, California from cirrhosis of the liver due to chronic alcoholism. He was checked in 7 days prior and his death certificate states that he was in an alcoholic phychosis for 3 weeks prior to his death. It also states that he had lived in Los Angeles for 41 years. He was single and a veteran of World War I. The informant was his sister, Martha Alder Miller. He was buried in the Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, Los Angeles County, California. [32][33][34]
