Biography

Margriet was was baptized in Albany, New York, on 22 January 1696, recorded as a daughter of Jan Albertsz and Geesje Dirksz.[1] Richard Schermerhorn and other researchers have identified her as the daughter of Jan Albertse Bratt (or Bradt). [2] This identification has been found to be erroneous, resulting from mistakenly treating Jan Albertsz and Jan Albertse Bratt as the same person. [3]

Margarita (or Margrietje) was the wife of Cornelius Schermerhorn, a son of Jacob Jacobse Schermerhorn and Gerritie Hendrickse Van Buren. According to Richard Schermerhorn in Schermerhorn Genealogy and Family Chronicles, they were married on 25 February 1713 at the house of Jan Albertson (Albertse) at Coxsackie, New York.[2] Records of the Albany Reformed Dutch Church record the marriage of Cornelis Scermerhoorn and Margritie Albertti on 6 February 1713, after three banns.[4] The marriage registry of the New York Lutheran Church shows a date of 8 February 1713 for the marriage (or possibly marriage banns) of Cornelis Schermerhoorn and Margareta Jansen, "at Klinckenberg." [5][6][7]

Children born to her marriage with Cornelius Schermerhorn were:[2]

  1. Johannes, born 1715; married Neeltje Scherp.
  2. Jannetie, baptized May 24, 1719, in Albany;[8] probably died young, as indicated by the birth of another child of the same name.
  3. Jacobus, baptized July 3, 1720, in Albany.
  4. Jannige (Jannetje), born Apr. 11, 1723, in Kinderhook, New York; baptized in Athens (Greene County), New York; married Wilhelmus Lehman on February 8, 1746, at Cornelius Schermerhorn's house in Athens.
  5. Gerritje, baptized May 14, 1727, in Kinderhook; married Jacob Bogert (a.k.a. Birgert) on May 13, 1753, in Athens.
  6. Magtelt, baptized January 7, 1730, in Kinderhook.
  7. Elsie, baptized April 1, 1733, in Kinderhook; married Andreas Scherp on November 28, 1752, in Athens.
  8. Cornelius, baptized August 15, 1736, in Athens.
  9. Cathalyntje, baptized June 22, 1740, in Athens.

Since she gets married at Caspersen's house in Coxsackie, I wonder if the Margriet Jansen that married Schermerhoon is actually the daughter of Jan Caspersen? see comment below.

I ran across another record for marriage of Cornelis in In the Year Book of the Holland Society of New York 1903, article "Some Early Records of the Lutheran Church, New York." that may be of interest at https://archive.org/details/yearbookofhollan1903holl/page/n51/mode/2up

1713, Feb. 25, at the house of Jan Caspersen at Kockshagki: Cornelis Schermerhoorn and Margareta Jansen.

this is in addition to the Feb 8 one at https://archive.org/details/yearbookofhollan1903holl/page/n39/mode/2up

1713, Feb. 8, at Klinckenberg. Cornelis Schermerhoorn and Margareta Jansen.

Note another marriage at Kockshagki that may be Margrete's sister at https://archive.org/details/yearbookofhollan1903holl/page/n47/mode/2up

June 11, 1705, at the house of Johann Caspersen at Kockshagki. Jacob Evertsen, Y.Y. of Albany, and Elisabeth Jansen, Y.D. of Kockshagki in Albany

and the earlier Bann on Second day of Pentecost at https://archive.org/details/yearbookofhollan1903holl/page/n37/mode/2up

Jacob Evertsen, Y.M. born at Albany and Elisabeth Jansen, Y.d. of Johan Caspersen, born at Albany.

My readings of the NY Lutheran Church records have left me with the impression that many of the [rather infrequent] services held in the Hudson River Valley were at somebody's house (a few men's names appear rather often in this connection) and that some families traveled to the place where the service was going to be. While marriages often took place in the home of the bride, and that can be a helpful clue to relationships, I don't think it's reasonable to assert that marrying in Jan Caspersen's house proves that the bride was Jan Caspersen's daughter.

The family of Jan Albertsz seems to have lived at Loonenburgh, so I wouldn't think that his daughters would be identified as "of Kockshagki". However, modern Athens and modern Coxsackie aren't real far apart, so it's credible that young adults would willingly travel between those places to transact the important business of getting married. Also "Klinckenberg" is identified as part of modern Athens in the place name lists compiled at https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1382968/what-did-newton-new-york-refer-albany-county-1720s-and-1730s but is said in https://books.google.com/books?id=T9oTAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA553 to be in the town of Coxsackie, so it presumably was convenient to both Kockshagki and Loonenburgh.

As for Margriet's older sister Elisabeth/Elsje, she was 13 years old (too young to marry anybody) in 1705. She married Henderik Schermerhoorn and is credited with children born over a span of 22 years.

Since profile manager of Jan Casperson does not have any record of a daughter named Margriet, I guess it is just a coincidence that two women named Jansen married at Jan Casperson's house and only one of them is recognized as his daughter.

It's extremely likely that these are her parents as well as several of their children married Cornelis' siblings. Unfortunately not much is known about Jan and Geesje beyond their baptisms.

The fact that at least two of the children married people named Scherp does provide a circumstantial link to the witnesses named on the 1696 baptismal record.

In fact there are two different records that appear to be of her marriage, and they have different patronymic names for her. The Albany Dutch Church gave her name as Albertti and the New York Lutheran Church called her Jansen.

The fact that two different churches recorded this same marriage may be an important clue as to who she was. Was she from a Lutheran family (possibly German)?

That she was assumed to have been the Margriet baptized on 22 Jan 1696 in Albany is probably the reason that Jan Albertsz Bratt and Jan Jansen Noorman were conflated. http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-328107
