Ralph Harry Albanese MM was born on 31st December 1920 at Caboolture, Queensland, Australia. He was a son of Raphael 'Ralph' Albanese and Annie Gibson. [1]
On 25th February 1941 at Tamworth, New South Wales, Ralph enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force for service overseas during the Second World War. He gave his year of birth as 1919, making him 21 rather than his actual twenty years. [2] He was allocated as a reinforcement to the 2/1st Infantry Battalion and joined his unit in the Middle East. Ralph subsequently served in the Middle East, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Papua, and New Guinea (the latter two then being separate Australian territories). [3][4] He attained the admirable rank of Warrant Officer Class II and was demobilised on 20th October 1945.
Whilst a Corporal, Ralph was awarded the Military Medal (MM), gazetted in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 1st April 1943, on page 758 at position 53. [5]
Ralph married Patricia Maria Taylor in 1949 at Sydney, New South Wales. [6] They had five children. [7]
He passed away, aged 85 years, in 2006. [8]
