Farid Fahd Farhan Ismail al-Atrash was born about 1910 in al-Qurayya, then part of the Ottoman Empire, now in southern Syria, possibly 19 Oct 1910. His parents were Fahd al-Atrash and 'Alia al-Mundhir.[1]
At age three, Farid fled with his mother and siblings from Syria to Egypt, due to the fighting with the French. Later he became a naturalized Egyptian citizen.[1]
He studied at Egypt's music conservatory and became an apprentice of the famous Egyptian composer Riad al-Sunbati. In the 1930s, he began his professional singing career by working for Egyptian radio stations. Over his four-decade music career, he was a highly regarded composer, singer, instrumentalist and actor.[1]
Although he came close to marrying on two known occasions, he was not formally married and did not have any children.[1]
