Biography

George was born in 1882. He was the son of William Aitkin and Annie Unknown.

He married Elizabeth Suttie Unknown.

George along with his wife Elizabeth and two children came to New South Wales around 1913.

For some years he carried on farming operations at Hannam Vale.

In about 1929 he went to Comboyne, where he conducted a general store,

He remained keenly interested in agricultural shows, and for several years carried out the secretarial work associated with the Comboyne Show.

He suffered a stroke around 1941 was in very indifferent health from that time.

He passed away on 9 October 1943 in Taree, New South Wales, Australia. [1]

He was buried at Comboyne Cemetery, Comboyne, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, New South Wales, Australia. [2] [3]

Obituary: The Northern Champion (Taree, NSW : 1913 - 1954), Wed 13 Oct 1943, Page 2 MR GEORGE AITKEN Comboyne lost a well known resident on Saturday afternoon when Mr. George Aitken passed away in the MRD Hospital. He suffered a stroke about two years ago, and had been in very indifferent health ever since. Deceased was born in Scotland 61 years ago, and about 30 years ago came to NSW with his wife and two children. For some years he carried on farming operations at Hannam Vale; and about 14 years ago he went to Comboyne, where he conducted a general store, and was also interested in the land. The late Mr Aitken was keenly interested in agricultural shows, and for several years carried out the secretarial work associated with the Comboyne Show. He was a man of exemplary character, and was respected by all sections of the community. He was a keen Freemason, and passed through the chairs of the Wingham Lodge. In addition to his widow, he is survived by three sons - William (Port Macquarie), George (Comboyne), and Sid (serving in the AIF). He is also survived by two brothers, Messrs. Frederick and Chas. Aitken, of Newcastle. The funeral took place at the Comboyne cemetery on Sunday, and was largely attended. Rev. E. M. Merton conduted the service, and Wor. Bro. C. Lunnon, WM of Lodge Cowper, read the burial service of the Masonic Lodge. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr H. V. Brewer.
