Biography

John Airey was born in Yorkshire, England.

Hazleton Plain Speaker; Monday, July 18, 1898: Saturday night at the residence of his son-in-law, John Cutter, 583 North Wyoming Street, John Airey, Sr., a pioneer resident of lower Luzerne and one of the best known men in this section, succumbed to the inevitable, from general debility, aged 80 years. He immigrated to this country from the home of his birth, Yorkshire, England, at the age of 13 years taking up his abode at Wilkes-Barre where he remained three years. He then came to this section and has resided here for the past sixty-four years.

He married his first wife nee Annie Powell (1820-1849), of Beaver Meadow, which union was blessed with four children, namely: Rev. John Airey, Jr., of Hazleton; the late Wm. Airey, of Hazleton; Mrs. Robert H. Sinex, Mrs. John Walters, Bernice, Sullivan County. He was married a second time, his bride being Miss Bessie Jackson, who survives him and to whom the following children were born: Mrs. John Johns, of Pittston; James Airey, of Nesquehoning; the late Mrs. Edward Burgess, of Stockton; Robert Airey, of McAdoo; Elmer Airey, of Hazleton; Mrs. Harry Zeiss, of Philadelphia; Mrs. William J. Filbert and Mrs. John H. Cutter, of Hazleton. He is also survived by three brothers, William, of Wilkes-Barre, and James and Richard, of Bradford County.

He was a constant member of the Methodist Episcopal church for a quarter of a century and an equal period an ardent advocate of temperance. He helped sink a number of slopes, among them being Hazle Mines. - Hazleton Plain Speaker; Monday, July 18, 1898: Airey - At 583 North Wyoming street on Saturday, June 16th. John Airey, Sr., aged 80 years, 6 months and 8 days. Funeral on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services at the house. Interment in Vine Street Cemetery. Bachman & Sons, funeral directors.
