Biography

Adolf Ferdinand was the youngest son of Petter Fredrik Ahlgren and his wife Anna Maria Sophia Reuser. He was born in Visby 3 April 1872.[1]

Adolf's elder brother Fredrik Ahlgren had established F. Ahlgrens Tekniska Fabrik in Gävle in 1885. Initially the products were chemicals for perfumes, medicines, ink and polish.

Adolf Ferdinand Ahlgren moved to Gävle in 1887.[2] He worked as an assistant for his brother Carl Fredrik, who was a factory owner.[3] He became a travelling salesman (sales manager) for the products of the factory.[4]

Adolf Ferdinand Ahlgren married Anna Maria Preutz 22 May 1899. They had at least five children.[5][6]

After the death of his brother Fredrik in 1907 Adolf Ahlgren shifted the production towards gelatin and gum arabic-based confectionery, by way of a successful introduction of a mouth water from a German recipe, named Läkerol, and then a cough drop with the same taste and name. Ahlgrens bilar (Ahlgren's cars) were first marketed in 1953 - a great success originating in a failed recipe for marshmallows.

Adolf Ferdinand Ahlgren died 4 April 1954.[7]
