John lived in Abbeville County, South Carolina, and was enslaved by Malinda Agnew.

In 1851 Malinda Agnew died. John was listed in Malinda's probate inventory and sale, valued at $400.[1] John was sold to A A Agnew (Andrew? Alfred?) for $500.
