Biography

Talmadge was born in 1929. He was the son of Cephas Adkins and Mollie Boggs. He passed away in 1974 at the age of 45.

Rev. Talmadge Adkins was a Pentecostal preacher whose death from rattlesnake bites was reported in national news outlets.

"EAST LYNN [West Virginia] -- "He died obeying the words of Jesus." Thus reads an epitaph inscribed in raised letters on the tomb of Talmage Adkins, a fundamentalist Pentecostal preacher who died of a rattlesnake bite following a 1974 serpent-handling service not far from the hilltop family cemetery where his body is interred.

On another hilltop nearby, in southern Wayne County, stands a church dedicated to carrying out the words found in the "longer ending" to Mark's gospel: "They shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not harm them." (MK 16: 17-18)."[1]

"Talmadge Adkins of Wayne, W. VA., handled rattlesnakes at the Church of All Nations New Scrabble Creek during services last Saturday. Blood from four bites on his hand is smeared on his shirt. Adkins refused medical help and died Thursday."[2]

At Rev. Talmadge Ray Adkin's funeral, "A man appeared with a box and opened the cover. The younger Richardson reached in and took out a copperhead. Onlookers did likewise and soon the singers and members of Adkin's church were handling the poisonous reptiles."[3]

BURIAL: Stiltner Cemetery, Wayne County, West Virginia, USA.
