Kenneth 'Kenny' Thomas Adamson CMG DDSc FRCS was born on 19th June 1904 in Prahran, on the eastern side of Hobson's Bay, Victoria, Australia. He was the son of Victorian-born parents, Thomas Cartwright Adamson, a dentist, and Gertrude Jane Thompson. [1] The family soon after settled in neighbouring Malvern, to the east of Prahran.

After completing his secondary education at Wesley College, he enrolled in the University of Melbourne, graduating in 1927 with a Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc). He was appointed a house surgeon at the (Royal) Dental Hospital of Melbourne where he engaged in research which led to a Doctoratae of Dental Science (DDSc) in 1929.

Kenny married Jean Isobel King Scott on 4th February 1932 in the Presbyterian (now Uniting) Church, Toorak. [2] The couple made their home in Toorak, a suburb neighbouring both Prahran and Malvern to the north; conveniently located for commuting to the Melbourne CBD, being just ten kilometres distant.

He became a lecturer, senior lecturer and head of the department of orthodontics in the Australian College of Dentistry, while continuing as honorary consultant in orthodontics to the Melbourne Dental Hospital. He 1935 he was appointed to the faculty of dental science at the University of Melbourne as a senior lecturer.

Kenny was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1963 and created Knight Bachelor in 1968.

A keen fisherman and golfer, Kenny was also fond of music, played the piano, organ and violin, and supported the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Aged 72 years, he passed away on 19th July 1976 at home in Toorak. [3] He was survived by his wife, son and two daughters.

Sir Kenneth Adamson held many important positions in dentistry in Victoria, including:

  • member of the council of the Australian College of Dentistry (until 1963)
  • member of the council of the Dental Hospital (from 1947)
  • president (1935), honorary secretary (1944) and permanent vice-president (from 1962) of the Victorian branch of the Australian Dental Association; he was federal president in 1954-60 and made a life member in 1970
  • president of the Australian Society of Orthodontists (1954-57)
  • founding member of the (Royal) Australian College of Dental Surgeons and president 1968-70
  • life member of the American Dental Association, the British Society for the Study of Orthodontics and the RACDS
  • Fellow of dental surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons, England (1956)
  • chair of the Dental Alumni Research Foundation (formed in 1963)
