BULLET IN LEG
Rifle Discharges on Cycle
Vivian Thomas Acton (17), of Crown Street, Holland Park, was admitted to the Mater Misericordiae Public Hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from a bullet wound in the left thigh. Acton, with Desmond Towzey (16), of Cavendish Road, Coorparoo, and Norman Clark (17), of Pembroke Road, Coorparoo, rode to Kingston to do some shooting. They were returning home on their bicycles about 3 o'clock when the machine which Towzey was riding struck a bump in the road near Mt. Gravatt, causing the pea rifle he was carrying across his handlebars to explode. The bullet entered the thigh of Acton, who was riding be side him; and he fell from the machine. The lads hailed a passing motor truck and Acton was driven to the nearest telephone, and the ambulance brigade was called. [2]

His occupation at time of enlistment was employed as a Aircraft Engine Maintenance Fitter with QANTAS Empire Airways. He had worked for them for 3 years 3 months prior to enlistment. He was in the fourth year of his apprenticeship in Aircraft Engineering. The record states he had 2 years education at Buranda Boys School, and 3 years education at Brisbane Central Techinal School. His rank at time of discharge from service on 06 September 1946 at Sergeant and he was serving with the 38th Squadron. [3] [4]
