Biography

Lytton Glynn[1][2] Acree Sr. was born 23 Dec 1866[1] in Model, Stewart County, Tennessee[1] to Nathan Curtis Acree Sr.[1] (1831-1890) and Sara (Marberry) Acree[1][3][4]. Lytton was a successful farmer[4][5][6][7] but he seems to have pursued this vocation as a background activity. He was a magistrate in Stewart County[1], a representative in the state legislature for 6 years[1], a merchant in Model for 25 years[1][8][9], a teacher in Model[1], and a postmaster for 10 years[10][1]. Lytton and his family lived most of his life in the home of his ancestors (on a low hill overlooking the Cumberland River on its western side) about 7 km northwest of Bumpus Mills, Tennessee. Much of the productive farm land of this homestead would, in the late 1930s be covered by Lake Barkley when the Tennessee Valley Authority dammed the river. Sometime between 23 July, 1914 and 24 March, 1917 Lytton built a new 'steamboat style' home closer to Model, Tennessee and up the hill from the old Great Western iron ore furnace. Lytton's youngest child Edward was born in this latter home. Both of these homes were razed when the whole of the 'Land-Between-the Rivers' was forcibly appropriated by the Federal government in the 1960s[2].

Lytton married Katie Mae[2] Ford on 8 Mar 1992 in Stewart County, Tennessee[11]. The couple had at least 6 children : Ruby[12], Bertram Vivian[13], Lytton Glynn Jr., Katie May Jr., Sarah Louise and Edward[5][6][7][8][9]. A seventh child, Lucy, who died young is indicated on the gravestone[14].

Lytton died on 9 July 1945 in a hospital in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee[10][1].

Research Notes

  1. In the 1930 census[8] the family name has been misindexed. If the page image is examined, the family name is written "Acree" and the Father's name is written "Lytam".
  2. In the 1880 census[4] the family name has been misindexed. If the page image is examined, the family name is written "Acree".
  3. It is unclear why children Sarah Louise and Edward do not appear in the 1920 census[7].
