Biography

Joe Ackroyd was born in Yorkshire, England.

Joseph was born in Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, in 1876. ^[1] His birth was registered in the first quarter. He was the son of Joseph Ackroyd and Frances Wood. He was baptized on June 18, 1876, in King Cross (Halifax), at St Paul.^[2] The Parish Register ^[3] lists him as Joseph Henry, parents Joseph and Frances Ellen, residing in Halifax. His father's occupation "Painter". He was enumerated in the 1881 census ^[4] as a five year old residing with his parents and four siblings at 81 Hanson Lane, Halifax. In 1891, ^[5] he was the youngest of four children living with his parents at 326 Queens Road, Halifax. He was fifteen and an "Errand Boy". His mother passed away in 1891, his father in 1897. Joseph appears in the 1901 census ^[6] residing in the household of sister Sarah Hannah and husband Joe Copley at 46 Blackwood Grove, Halifax. He was listed as Joe Harry, age twenty four, and occupation "Painter" (House). Sister Clara Ann also at residence.

Joe married Flora Crossley in 1902.^[7] The ceremony was performed on March 21st in Halifax at the Queen Street Chapel. According to the Parish Register, ^[8] Joseph was a twenty five year old bachelor and "House Painter" residing at 46 Blackwood Grove, Halifax. His father was named as Joseph Ackroyd "Painter". Flora was listed as a twenty seven year old spinster and "Draper's Assistant" residing at 272 Queens Road, Halifax. Her father was named as Joshua Crossley "Commission Agent". The witnesses were Joe Copley and Mary Elizabeth Wood. The couple would have one child, Constance Vera in 1904, before Flora's death in 1910.

Joe and daughter Vera (as listed) appear in the 1911 census ^[9] residing in the household of brother in law Joe Copley at The Fleece Inn, 2 Gibbet Street, Halifax. Joe is listed as a widower and "House Painter".

Joseph passed away in 1934.^[10] His death was registered in the first quarter in Halifax. He was fifty eight.
