Birth & Baptism

Cecil Ryther Acklom was born in 1872 in Hastings, Sussex, England [1] His father was on leave from his job as (British) Inspector General of Police for an Indian province. Cecil was the son of Robert Evatt Acklom and Annabella Jessie Daun.

Boarding School 1881 Bristol England

In 1881 Cecil and his elder brother are both at a boarding school just outside Bristol in England. [2]

Naval Career 1885-1910

Cecil Acklom had a distinguished naval career in the period of general world peace 1885 to 1910 when promotion beyond Lieutenant was almost impossible to achieve: He entered the Navy as a 3 year old Midshipman 15 July 1885 [3] As an 18 year old midshipman in 1890 he won his first medal, the OBE, in a punitive naval attack on the rebellious Sultan of Witu or Vitu in East Africa. Over the next 20 years European war became ever more remote and in 1908 we signed the Entente Cordiale with our old enemy France. Cecil had already decided that the future lay not in gallantry but in technological supremacy: He played a major role in the development of the torpedo for the Royal Navy [4] and in 1909 he became Superintendent of the Royal Naval Torpedo Factory at Greenock. [5]

Strange Retirement 1910-1919

Cecil Acklom performed his most important role in the Royal Navy after his retirement in 1910. He remained the Superintendent of the Naval Torpedo Factory at Greenock, Scotland, where satisfaction with his activity in supervising all manufacture and development of torpedos for the Navy was clearly expressed twice over : in 1914 just before the beginning of WW1 he was made a CB - Companion of the Order of the Bath, [6] and in 1919 at the end of the war the medal and clasp he won as a midshipman in 1885 were upgraded to Commander of the British Empire. [7] [8]

Death 1937 Dublin

Cecil Ryther Acklom died 12 June 1937 in Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland and was returned to London for burial. [9] He had never married.
