This enslaved ancestor's profile has a preliminary Last Name At Birth (LNAB) until a surname can be determined. Please see the US Black Heritage Naming Conventions for Slaves before merging or changing the LNAB.
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.
Sam (Abney) Gilder is a part of US Black heritage.
Sam was bought for $342.00 by Zachariah Abney (1782-1838) on January 1, 1824 in Edgefield County, South Carolina from John Abney.[1]
It's thought that this is the same Sam that was sold to William Gilder on December 25, 1839 for $1,740.00 from the estate of Zachariah Abney (1782-1838).[2] By this time Sam had become an accomplished Blacksmith.

Before I estimated any of the dates for the Abney slaves I looked at every value and realized that the very young, and older slaves were valued less; female less than male. After comparing the rest of the Abney values I decided that at the first transfer Sam was a boy. I estimated his age to be around ten years old. This would have made him around 27 at the second transfer. The appraised value was inline with my estimated date. I set the death date for after the last transfer date. Everything can be modified as more records are found.
He was called Sam the Blacksmith. Is it possible that Blacksmith became his last name once he was emancipated?
The last name of the last owner is hard to make out. I've included a link in the source to view this for free. I did a search in the slave transfer records for Edgefield, Laurens, & Newberry Counties South Carolina using every spelling combination I could think of. I found nothing.
