Biography

Mamie Lou Abernathy was born in Texas, one of six children born to Sterling Abernathy and Josie Alice Boyd.

Her son Paul writes: “She was actually born in a covered wagon on the way from Georgia to Texas. When they arrived in Winters, Texas, as was the custom, they registered her birth in Winters, Runnels County, Texas. The family lived in town for a while and then out to a farm outside the city.“^[1]

Mamie Lou married Henry Crawford in 1892 in Texas. ^[2]

Mary Lou’s sister Ida married Henry’s brother Wesley.

They moved from Texas to California in 1920.

Mamie Lou and Henry had nine children, six of whom lived to adulthood.

Mary Lou died in a car accident in 1931. ^{[3] [4]}

According to an article at the time, she and another woman, Mrs. Helen Curtis Brady were on their way to Nevada when they tried to pass another car and were hit head-on in Modesto.

Family Mystery

Both daughters, Joelle and Myra told their children that both their parents were killed in that car accident. But Henry died in 1930. Why they would claim they both died in the accident is not known. Surely they would have known when their parents died. ^[5]

4. ↑ In a letter dated May 31, 1931, Grace Abernathy, Mamie’s sister-in-law added this in a letter to a cousin: “Did you hear about Reuben's half-sister in Los Angeles getting killed in a car wreck? I think it must have happened the last week you were here.”
