Herbert was born in 1889. He was the son of Greer Abernathy and Bettie Abernathy.
The marriage of Herbert Abernathy and Edith Jacobs is recorded on Oct. 2, 1909.[1]
The 1910 U.S. census lists Herbert Abernathy, 22, as grandson-in-law in the household of Percilla Oliver, 221 S. Farrish Street, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, married to Edith M. Abernathy, 17.[2]
The 1912 city directory for Cape Girardeau, Missouri, lists Herbert Abernathy and his wife, Edith, living at 22 n Spanish. Herbert is a porter.[3]
In 1949, the city directory for Flint, Michigan, lists Herbert Abernathy as a maintenance man for Chevrolet, living at 3302 St. John, with his wife, Edith.[4]
Herbert passed away Aug. 5, 1964, in Rockford, Illinois. The Rockford Morning Star reported, "Herbert Abernathy, 75, died Wednesday, August 5, 1964, in his apartment. Born April 1, 1889, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., son of Mr. and Mrs. Greer Abernathy. Lived two years in Rockford, coming from Michigan. Survivors include cousin, Essie Laurie, Chicago." He is buried in Cedar Bluff Cemetery, Rockford, Illinois.[5]
