Brig.-Gen. Hugh Sempill, 12th Lord Sempill was born on 16 May 1688. He was the son of Francis Abercromby, Lord Glasford and Anne Sempill, Lady Sempill.[1][2] He married Sarah Gaskell, daughter of Nathaniel Gaskell, on 13 May 1718. He died on 25 November 1746.

He gained the rank of Adjutant in 1708 in the 26th Foot (Cameronians). He fought in the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709.3 He gained the rank of Ensign in 1709. He gained the rank of Captain in 1712. He held the office of Burgess of Glasgow in 1714. He sold the Eliotstoun and Sempill estates in 1727.[3] to William MacDowall.[4][5][6] He succeeded as the 12th Lord Sempill [S., 1488] on 17 February 1727. He gained the rank of Lietuenant-Colonel in 1731 in the 19th Foot. He held the office of Burgess of Edinburgh in 1739. He purchased North Barr estate in 1741. He gained the rank of Colonel between 1741 and 1745 in the 43rd Highlanders. He gained the rank of Brigadier-General in 1745. He gained the rank of Colonel in 1745 in the 25th Foot. He fought in the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745. He held the office of Governor of Barbados in 1746, although he did not take up the post. He fought in the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746.

He was made Burgess of Glasgow on 11 Mar 1714.[7]

He married Sarah Gaskell on 13 May 1718 at Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire.[8]

The Scots Magazine - Friday November 1746, p50. DEATHS: Nov. 25. At Aberdeen, Hugh Sempill, Lord Sempill, a Brigadeer-General, and Colonel of a regiment of foot. His Lordship is succeeded by his eldest son John. (Spellings as per newspaper).[9][10][11]
