Clarence Abel is Notable.

Clarence "Taffy" Abel was born on May 28, 1900 in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. He was the son of John Abel and Charlotte Gurnoe.[1][2] He married Irene Anderson on October 14, 1906 in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan.[3] However, they divorced before 1930, for Clarence is listed in the 1930 United States census as divorced.[4]

Clarence was an ice hockey player, and first played with the Michigan Soo Nationals, a team in the United States Amateur Hockey Association, in 1918. In 1922, he then played for the St. Paul Athletic Club. Clarence was chosen to play for the United States Olympic Ice Hockey team in the 1924 Olympics in Chamonix, France. He had the honor of carrying the United States flag in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Clarence scored 15 goals at the Olympics, and the United States team won the Silver medal. His superb performance caught the attention of the NHL. A few years later, in 1926, Clarence signed with the New York Rangers. He was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks after the 1928-1929 season. Clarence retired after the 1933-1934 season after the owner refused to give him a raise. After his retirement, he operated Taffy's Lodge, a tourist resort located in Sault Sainte Marie, MIchigan.[5]

Clarence passed away in 1964 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan.[6]

Clarence was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973.[7]
