William enlisted in the AMF in Melbourne on 09 Jul 1940 as a Private, No VX36790. At the time he was a labourer and was living at Cowes, VIC. He was born on 16 Jul 1912 in Isisford, QLD as William BENNETT.

After training he was posted to 2/22 Bn at Bonegilla on 05 Mar 1941. On 10 Apr 1941 he embarked for Rabaul, arriving there on 26 Apr 1941. He was a machine gunner.

When the Japanese invaded he was captured at Kerevat and became a POW. He was on board the Montevideo Maru when it was sunk off the coast of the Philippines on 01 Jul 1942. There were no survivors among the POWs and civilian internees.
