Frances was born in 1857. She was the daughter of John Abbott and Hannah Matilda Brooks. When she graduated from Vassar College, she was the first woman from Concord, New Hampshire to earn a college degree.
She studied the effect that college education had on women's life and careers using statistics with the American Association of University Women. She was also a member of several suffrage organizations and wrote about the topic foro local and national newspapers.
She was a naturalist. She founded the Wild Flower Club in 1896. Her 1906 book Birds and Flowers about Concord, New Hampshire' catalogued over 200 birds and 500 flower species local to the area.
She also published research on the genealogy and history of the Concord, New Hampshire area.
She passed away in 1939, and was buried in the Old North Cemetery.
