Phillip was apprenticed to John Bateson a clothier of Wortley Leeds. He went Bankrupt in 1811 and after that appears to have worked with his brother Henry in London as a clerk running the Stone Merchant's business at York Wharf Lambeth. His occupation at death is listed as Stone - cutter.
