Eva Aariak was a Canadian First Peoples .

Eva Qamaniq Aariak (ᐄᕙ ᐋᕆᐊᒃ) was born 10 Jan 1955 in Arctic Bay, Northwest Territories.[1]

She was the first Languages Commissioner for Nunavut, appointed in 1999 and served until December 2004. She was reappointed as acting Commissioner in December 2007.[2]

She was coordinator of the Baffin Divisional Education Council's Inuktitut language book publishing program, President of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, and chair of the Nunavut Film Development Corporation.

She was elected to the territory's Legislative Assembly in 2008 and became Canada's fifth woman Premier on 19 Nov 2008.

She was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada on 19 November 2018, for her dedication to promoting Inuit culture and languages and her political impacts regarding poverty reduction and the promotion of equity and gender equality.

  • Her father was Eric Mitchell. He was of Scottish descent and worked for the art company Canadian Arctic Producers.[4]
  • She was raised by her adoptive father, Aliguq, who worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company in Arctic Bay. (Full name is Aliguq Joseph)
  • Her mother, Kautaq, was a translator at the Arctic Bay nursing station and raised seven children.
  • Eva attended a vocational school in Churchill, Manitoba.
  • She graduated from high school in Ottawa, Ontario and earned post-secondary certificates in business management and teaching.
  • Eva Aariak raised four children.
