William Arthur Callander a'Beckett was born on 7th July 1833 at London, Middlesex, England. He was the son of William A'Beckett and Emily Hayley. He was educated at King's College, London.
His parents migrated to the Colony of New South Wales (Australia) aboard City of Edinburgh, 1836-37, whereupon his father commenced a successful legal practice. William Junior ventured to the Colony of Victoria upon completing his formal education.
In 1855 at Melbourne in the Colony of Victoria he married Emma Mills,[1] daughter of John Mills, a freed convict from Tasmania who founded brewing in Melbourne. Their daughter Emma Minnie, whose pursuit was painting, married another of the same pursuit, Arthur Merric Boyd, and there began extended generations of artists in Australian cultural life, collectively the Boyd family.
William was a barrister, member of the colonial militia, a magistrate and a Member of The Legislative Council, which is the Upper House of the Colony of Victoria's Parliament.
He passed away on 16th December 1901 at Saint Kilda, Victoria and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery, in Carlton North in the state of Victoria, Australia.
