Mary was engaged to Young Ireland rebel leader Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-1867) [Meagher-158] when he was arrested for treason in 1848. On the day he was sentenced he signed and gave Mary a book of poems by Irish patriot Thomas Davis. Initially sentenced to death, Meagher was instead was transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1849. Mary later married Patrick Fitzgibbon of Clonmel.
Meagher never returned to Ireland. He eventually made his way to the USA where he eventually entered politics, becoming acting governor of Montana several times. He is considered the designer of the orange, white and green tri-color flag, which was adopted by the Irish Republic in 1922.
