Hi, John -- I am also researching Maher/Meaghers from Newfoundland. I see you have a Mary Meagher from Ferryland. My Mahers/Meaghers were from Greenspond in Bonavista Bay, but I've always wondered whether there was a connection between the two families. My Gedmatch number is A800268 and I am on Ancestry, as well. Wikitree doesn't show a genealogical relationship between us but I'm not sure whether they do a Gedmatch comparison. Would you be willing to share your Gedmatch number, if you have one? Thanks in advance. Barbara Maher-Erwin
Hi Barbara,

I just did a gedmatch comparison of our kit #'s and we do have a small match. It says: Estimated number of generations to MRCA = 7.5. My kit # is KQ5512045.

I know very little about Margaret Maher other than she is a gggm on my mother's side and she married my gggf Richard Roche on 21 Nov 1843 in St. John's. Apparently she was from Ferryland, or some place nearby although I do not know that for a fact. Given the year of their marriage I'll make a guess she would have been born around 1820. Richard died in 1872. Her ID# on my Wikitree is Maher-1947.

I looked at your tree on Ancestry and it appears your Maher ancestor from that time period was born in Ireland and then went to Greenspond. That isn't near Ferryland so I'll make a guess our Maher connection would be in Ireland not Newfoundland.

Let me know what you think. Thanks for getting in touch!

Hi, John -- Yes, if the match is at 7.5 generations back, it would have to be in Ireland. It could also be another Newfoundland connection, given the amount of endogamy present in that era. My paternal ancestors all passed through Newfoundland on their way from Ireland and, in a few cases, Dorset, England.

Hi, John!

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions or problems, let me know.

Take care

Hi John

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting suggested matches, once that has been done, you add any remaining names manually. The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.
