Hi Robert,

I've just connected your great grandfather Frederick to his parents. It seems we share a distant ancestor - Laurence Rickinson (abt.1692-abt.1754). Laurence was also the ancestor of Lewis Raphael Rickinson (1883 - 1945) who served as chief engineer on the Endurance during Shackleton's expedition to Antarctica!

best wishes, Jemima

Hi Jemima…thanks for that. I actually have a lot of info on my tree on Ancestry regarding the family. I can help you with 1 bit of info…Laurence (Lawrence) was born in 1692, and died on 10 October 1755 in Fylingdales, Yorkshire. A number of years ago there was a massive web site dedicated to families from the Fylingdales/Robin Hoods Bay region of Yorkshire…majority of who were fishing families; it covered most of my family…and obviously yours…right back to the 1500s it was incredibly well researched, and I’m thankful I entered up most of the family connections onto my Ancestry tree…though didn’t get the documents…which took forever to enter up, as when I went back at a later date, the site had vanished. So there is a massive amount of info on my Ancestry tree. I’m reticent to do a GEDCOM as I know that in other branches there are errors, and two distant parts of the tree have become disconnected from the main tree. I haven’t done any further research on the tree for a few years now…I decided that it had just gotten too big and too distant, and I was only going to work with close family, most of whom I had info for already. The Australian family, as it turned out, are particularly interesting. I also have some researched stories on Rickinson & Elizabeth Pickhills family on my blog if your research brings you to that point. Thanks for the contact…if you would like to access the info on my Ancestry tree, I can give you access to it . Regards, Tim Alderman (Robert Pickhills …I changed my name back in the 1980’s after a huge family falling out).

Hi,

Thank you so much for your reply. Such a shame that the site you are talking about no longer exists as I would love to see the documents. I don't have an ancestry account at the moment so please could you provide a sharing link so I can take a peak at your tree? I'd also be really interseted in hearing about your Rickinson & Elizabeth stories so a link to your blog would be much appreciated too. My Rickinson branch founded a shipping company in Hartlepool and they made their fortunes but then lost them again when the ships sank in World War I.

Many thanks, Jemima

Hi Robert,

Thanks for letting me know about your intention to have some profiles in WikiTree and using these as a possible link for those interested. I have found WikiTree to be an excellent tool for research and collaboration.

You are now a member of the WikiTree Community. Please note we are trying to build one Collaborative Tree which means one profile per person. It is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add Profiles to WikiTree. Once you entered your family members it is exciting to see other people finding your family profiles, asking questions, and expanding it.

If you need any help getting started check out the help section from the menu, top left, or head over to the G2G forum, you might want to check out the introductory WikiTree video that a member created.

Our Mentor Team are a friendly bunch of volunteers who will be glad to help you with specific problems if you have any.

Great to have you on board, good luck growing your branches, and thanks for offering to help with our shared tree.

Hi Robert,

Nice to hear you have been enjoying genealogy over the past 20 years and expanded your family tree with over 8,000 persons. Are you planning on contributing to our Wikitree and adding your own research or are you just wanting to search and use the forum? You are more than welcome to do so, it is free, and you don’t have to become a volunteer.

If you want to contribute as well, entering and maintaining person profiles, please leave us another message and we can then make you a full member. As indicated above, if you just want to use our forums and search around then you can do that as a guest.

One of our volunteers will be happy to make you a full member if you post again.

Thanks for using WikiTree to grow your family tree.
