Biography

Research Notes

This profile needs further consideration. It is not clear which family of Hungerford she comes from but it seems likely she was born some considerable time after 1411.

Joan Hungerford (1411-1431) is shown as spouse of John Marvin (1500-1566), she is also shown as his great-grandmother. The children attached have DoB of 1450. Bairfield-1 20:04, 16 July 2014 (EDT)

It is clear that she was not a daughter of Sir Walter Hungerford, 1st Lord Hungerford.

I think part of the problem is that she was attached to the wrong John Mervyn. The pedigree of Walter Mervyn (Mervin-7) shows his parents to have been John Mervyn and Joan Hungerford. It appears Joan had been attached as spouse of his great grandson John (+1566). The fact that the names Walter and Edmund entered the Mervyn line here is suggestive though inconclusive. It's not clear to me why she could not be the daughter of Walter Hungerford + 1449, if he is the Walter the profile rules out.

Nor am I aware of him having a different daughter by that name as a previous comment mentions. Are we looking at different Walters?

"This lady is thus described [daughter of the Lord Hungerford of Heytesbury] in the ancient pedigrees of Mervyn; but I do not find her identified in the pedigrees of Hungerford. The presumption however is very strong, that she was the daughter either of Walter Lord Hungerford, K.G. Lord Treasurer, by Catherine Peverell, or of his son Robert Lord Hungerford, by Margaret Botreaux. Walter died in 1449; Robert, at an early age, in 1459. It appears by Dugd. Mon. Ang. vol.II. 483, that King Edward the Fourth, by letters patent, dated 20 Feb.1471-2, upon the petition of Margaret Lady Hungerford, widow of Robert Lord Hungerford, granted a licence to the said Margaret, and to John Cheyne, Esq. and John Mervyn, Esq. to found an alms-house at Heytesbury, and that divine service should be celebrated in the parochial Church there for the souls of divers of the families of Hungerford and Botreaux, and also for the souls of John Cheyne and John Mervyn, when they should depart this life. And the said Margaret Lady Hungerford and Botreaux, by her will declared at Heytesbury 8 Aug. 1476 (vide Dug. Bar. vol. II. 209), appointed, that in the Chapel which she had begun to build within the Cathedral of Sarum, there shoud be founded a perpetual chantry for the daily celebration of divine service, for the souls of divers of her family and, amongst others for the soul of this John Mervyn, Esq. "after this life."

The gentleman's magazine, and historical chronicle, Volume 92, Part 2

she married John Mervyn, son of Ralph

"Mervyn, impaling, Hungerford of Heytesbury -- Per pale, indented G.and V. a chevron Or -- quartering Sable two bars Azure, in chief three plates -- for John Mervyn of Fonthill, Esq. (son of Ralph) and Joan his wife, daughter of the Lord Hungerford of Heytesbury."

According to the Visitations of Sussex, see below, John Mervyn was married to Joan, daughter of 'Lord Hungerford of Heytesbury'. Is it possible that Walter had another daughter, Joan?

Birthplace should be Farleigh Hungerford in Somerset. Farley and Hungerford are two unconnected parishes in separate counties.

Hungerford-242 and Hungerford-102 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate? Born same place only 8 years apart and dates are approximate. No connections.
John Martyn c 1503-1566 see http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1509-1558/member/marvyn-sir-john-1503-66 (ie not husband of Joan Hungerford and these children)
