Joan Markenfield was born about 1395, Ripon, Yorkshire, England.

Marriage

  • Joan married Sir Roger Warde, knight. Both mentioned in the Will of her brother John Merkyngfeld, 1431.[1]
  • Joan married Roger Warde before 1413 when Elizabeth, widow of John de Hirst appealed Thomas de Merkingfeld the younger, John and Robert de Merkingfeld, Roger Warde and Nicholas Ward for the death of her husband.[2]
  • On 1 Mar 1414/5 Roger Warde, witnessed the Agreement of Marriage of Walter, son of Sir Walter de Calverley, with Elizabeth [sister to Joan], daughter of Thomas de Markenfield of Markenfield[3]

Will of Joan Warde, relict of SIR ROGER WARDE the elder of Givendale, knight,[5] lying on her sick-bed. To be buried at the Abbey of Esholt, within the Church; to the Prioress and Convent of Esholt 20s., and 10-shillings to be distributed among the Nuns [sundry other legacies]. A jewel called "an nowche" of gold, with a precious stone, to be sold, and the price given to a priest to celebrate for my soul and my husband's, and for the soul of Thomas Markenfield, my brother. To Christopher son of Sir Roger Warde the younger a silver bowl with a cover called "a plane piece." Residue to Nicholas Warde and Wiliam Warde my sons, equally, and they to be executors. Witnesses: Dominus Richard Brown, Rector of Guiseley
