James Edward Alexander Rundell Guinness was born on 23 September 1924. He was the son of Sir Arthur Rundell Guinness and Frances Patience Wright.

He married Pauline Vivien Mander, daughter of Lt.-Col. Howard VivienMander and unknown wife (?), on 5 November 1953 He died on 26 March 2006 at age 81.

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He fought in the Second World War He gained the rank of officer in 1943 in the service of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was educated at New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He was with Guinness Mahon & Company, bankers in 1946. He was partner of Guinness Mahon & Company in 1953.

He was Commissioner of Public Works Loans Commission in 1962. He was chairman of Guinness Mahon Holdings between 1968 and 1972. He was chairman of the Public Works Loan Board between 1970 and 1990 He was a director of Guinness Peat Group between 1973 and 1987. He was deputy chairman of Provident Mutal Life Assurance Association between 1983 and 1989. He was invested as a Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1986. He lived in 2003 at Coldpiece Farm, Hound Green, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England.
