Birth

Ruth Hubbard, daughter of Samuel Hubbard and Tacy Cooper, was born 10 January or September 1640 in Springfield, Massachusetts. "Ruth Hubbert the daughter of Samuell Hubbert borne the tenth day of the [11 or 7] mon: 1640 hora septima besstina."[1][2][3][4] Her birth was said to be the first recorded at Springfield.[4]

Marriage and Children

Ruth married Robert Burdick on 2 November 1655,[5][6] at Newport, Rhode Island.[7][8]

Robert and Ruth had the following children, all of whom were named in the 1692 agreement to distribute Robert's estate:

  • Thomas,[4] born ca. 1656, probably at Newport,[9] married Martha _____[8]
  • Naomi, born ca. 1658, probably at Newport;[9] married Jonathan Rogers[8]
  • Ruth, born ca. 1660, probably at Newport,[9] married John Phillips[8]
  • Deborah, born ca. 1662, probably at Westerly,[9] married Joseph Crandall[8]
  • Benjamin, born ca. 1666, probably at Westerly,[9] married first Mary Reynolds(?) and second to wid. Jane Shelley[8]
  • Samuel, born ca. 1668, probably at Westerly,[9] married Mary Foster[8]
  • Tacy, born ca. 1670, probably at Westerly,[9] married Joseph Maxson[8]
  • Robert, born ca. 1674,[9] probably at Westerly; married Rebecca Foster.[8] NOTE: he was NOT the husband of Dorcas Lewis (see research note on son Robert's profile)
  • Hubbard, born ca. 1676, probably at Westerly,[9] married Hannah Maxson[8]

Other children:

  • unknown son, possibly named Roger, born ca. 1664, probably at Westerly;[9] died the Monday before 25 September 1683 in Westerly,[8] his burial was described by Samuel Hubbard in a report[6]
  • unknown, born ca. 1678, probably at Westerly; probably died in infancy[8][9]

Church Membership

Ruth is found on a list of people who became members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church prior to 1692.[10] Her parents were among the founders of this branch of the church in Westerly.

Death

Ruth was living on 17 May 1691, when she and her husband sold 100 acres of land to John Macoone for £10.[10] She died before 8 March 1692, when Robert made an agreement with his son-in-law to provide for him until his death.[6]

Find A Grave suggests that Ruth is buried in the "Burdick Ground," also known as Rhode Island Historical Cemetery in Westerly.[11]

Letter Written in 1666

The following letter was written from Westerly, 4 August 1666, by Mrs. Ruth Burdick to her father, Samuel Hubbard, at Newport (the full text of the letter can be read in the source book).

"Most loving and dear father and mother, my duty with my husband and children presenter unto you with all my dear friends. My longing and desire is to hear from you, how your hearts are borne up above these troubles which are come upon us and are coming as we fear; for we have the rumors of war, and that almost every day. Even now we have heard from your Island by some Indians, who declared unto us that the French have done some mischief upon the coast, and we have heard that 1200 Frenchmen have joined with the Mohawks to clear the land both of English and of Indians. But I trust in the Lord, if such a thing be intended, that he will not suffer such a thing to be...
"Dear father and mother, the Lord hath been pleased to give us here many sweet and comfortable days of refreshing, which is great cause of thankfulness, and my desire is that we may highly prize it, and you with us give the Lord praise for his benefit. I pray remember my love to all my dear friends with you in fellowship. Sister Sanders desires to be remember to you all, so doth sister Clarke. Your loving daughter, to my power. "RUTH BURDICK"[12][13]

Robert Burdick Jr., son of Robert and Ruth, did not marry Dorcas Lewis. See Burdick-16. Please edit this profile by deleting the name of Robert Jr.'s spouse

Ruth Burdick-296 very likely did not marry her son Samuel Burdick-99. Could someone determine which is the true relationship? Given the birth year of Burdick-99, he is likely Ruth's son and not her husband.
