Jack Bean is an Anzac who served in World War One.

John Willoughby Butler 'Jack' Bean was born on 1st January 1881 in Bathurst, New South Wales (Australia). He was the second of three sons of Edwin Bean and Lucy Butler. [1] In 1889 the family moved to England, where Jack and his brothers were educated. Jack and his younger brother Monty returned to Australia in first decade of the new Century.

After graduating from Clifton College, Bristol, Jack attended Selwyn college, University of Cambridge to study medicine. He subsequently became a medical doctor.[2]

Served in the Australian Imperial Force 1914-1919
3rd Infantry Battalion; Australian Army Medical Corps

On 24th August 1914, upon the declaration of the (First World) War, Jack was commissioned as a medical officer in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and allocated to the 3rd Infantry Battalion. [3] He soon found himself in the great armada of troop ships making their way to Egypt, embarking at Sydney on 20th October 1914 aboard HMAT Euripides A14. [4] John saw action with 3rd Battalion at both Gallipoli (1915) and on the Western Front (1916-18). He returned to Australia 23rd October 1918. [3] For his war service he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Jack married English-born Isabelle John nee Gater, twenty years his senior, in 1922 in Sydney, New South Wales. [5] Isabelle passed away in 1939.

Aged 88 years, he passed away in 1969 in Sydney's northern suburbs. [6]
