Altavilla (or d'Altavilla) is the name adopted in Italy by the members of the D'Auteville family that migrated in the south of Italy in the XI century or were born there after the first members successsfully conquered fiefs for themselves. Many were also involved in the Crusades. They were coming from Normandy with Scandinavian origins and in 1139 Ruggero II founded the kingdom of Sicily after that his fathrer Ruggero I had defeated the moslems that were occupying Sicily .
