Would you like to learn how to research your Scottish ancestors in 2024?

The Scotland Project is hard at work improving profiles for our Scottish ancestors and we would love you to join us!  The Project covers all things Scottish so, no matter what your interests are, there's a team waiting for you!

You'll begin with a journey down our Tartan Trail (you can learn more about it here) where you'll not only improve and/or learn new skills researching your Scottish ancestors, but will also meet new people and learn to work within an active, collaborative WikiTree community.  While you're learning, you'll also be helping to clean up, source and connect our shared tree!

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

A major membership benefit of both the Tartan Trail and Project membership is the Scotland project's Discord server which provides real-time access to some of the most experienced Scottish researchers who can help with your questions.

After completion of the Tartan Trail Level 2, you will be awarded your Scotland Project Badge. You will then be required to join a team, work with your Team Leader(s) and respond to periodic Project Check-ins. We recognise that people lead busy lives and are grateful for any and all contributions made towards the project's goals.

PLEASE NOTE: if you are just looking for help with specific ancestors in Scotland, and don't wish to take the Tartan Trail and become active in the Scotland Project, then create a new message in G2G tagged SCOTLAND and one of our friendly Scotland Project team members will try to assist you :)

To start your journey, post an ANSWER below!

Don't forget to add the Scotland tag to your profile page

If you leave a *comment* here instead of an *answer,* your comments will be read and then removed. This thread is only for joining the project, and all other questions should be started on a separate G2G post.

Again, please be certain to click *answer* below, not *comment.*

I was born and bred in Scotland, on the Isle of Arran, but have lived in Sydney, Australia for 35 years. I am a long-time genealogist and am disappointed that I only discovered WikiTree three months. However, I have made up for lost time and have managed to create about 2500 profiles. Looking forward to joining the Tartan Trail and learning how to further my research and enter it all in the correct format.

Regards

Marion

I would love to join the Scotland Project as I have many Scottish Ancestors and would love to learn more. I have been DNA tested and am on several sites. I have been researching and comparing as well as having my DNA broken down and compared to finds from Archeological digs and so far most everything is verifying itself across the board. Ada(Queen of Scotland) is listed here as my 28th or 29th great grandmother, and I have had DNA matched to several Clans. My maternal grandmother was a Campbell through her father: however, I am also matching up through my mom's Dad's side as well. Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries with so much history and honor, sacrifice, loyalty, live if family, Clan and Country. I am proud to be 46%Scottish and wish it was more lol.

I'll start the Tartan Trails self-directed course this week! I hope to then join the Scotland project.

Just to clarify, the Tartan Trail is not self-directed. Level 1 of the Trail is self-learning, using lessons provided by the Trail Team and working on profiles selected by us. Everyone who applies will receive a PM (private message) from the Scotland Project's Membership Coordinator and those who respond will be put on our waiting list, and will only start the Tartan Trail when a place becomes available.
Thank you for clarifying!
Hi again, I've requested to join the Scotland project. Haven't heard back yet but I know that will happen! Quick question: When you wrote "everyone who applies will receive a PM from the Scotland Project's Membership Coordinator," is there a separate way to ask to take the Tartan Trails course, or does one do so only after joining the Scotland project?
Hi Suzanne,

The answer you gave above yesterday was your first request to join the Scotland Project. The Membership Coordinator will get back to you in due course regarding beginning the Tartan Trail. That is the first step.

You must complete Levels 1 and 2 of the Tartan Trail in order to become a member of the Scotland Project. We have many applications, and there is a waiting list.
